the end of ignorance - acts 17:16-31
Ignorance of False Worship... As Paul enters the city of Athens, he is immediately infuriated with the ignorant, idolatrous worship of the Athenians. They even admit their ignorance by worshipping 'unknown gods'. Paul uses their confession of ignorance as an illustration to present to them the One, True God.
Who God Really Is... Contrary to Greek thought, Paul revealed that there was only One, Creator God, Lord of heaven and earth, who needs nothing and no one. He does not live in temples made by man nor served by human hands, but gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
Worship of the True God Revealed in Christ... Though God had revealed Himself in part through creation and the Prophets, now He has revealed Himself fully in the person of Jesus Christ, God in flesh. With this greater knowledge comes greater accountability. Though God had overlooked past ignorance, He now calls all people to repent and believe the Gospel. Ignorance is no longer an excuse.
*Questions for Reflection & Discussion:
1. What are some modern-day examples of ignorant worship? In what ways do they misunderstand or misrepresent the true nature of God?
2. In what ways are you tempted to earn God's favor, or fear God's wrath instead of trusting in Christ's death as full payment for your sin?
3. Knowing that Christ took the full brunt of God's wrath that was aimed toward you, how does that challenge/encourage you to share this life altering message with your lost family and friends?
