What would jesus say about our church? do not fear! - Revelation 2:8-11

The Situation in Smyrna... The church in Smyrna lived with persecution and poverty due largely to the slanderous lies of Jews who did not believe in Jesus and hated Christianity.

The Purpose of the Suffering... Jesus knew about Smyrna's trials and clearly spoke of them as work of the Devil (vs. 10), but why did Jesus allow such pain to come upon His faithful church? In vs. 10, Jesus says that the persecution was for the testing of their faith. Such testing purifies the church by strengthening real faith while uncovering and destroying faith that is false.

Jesus' Instructions... Jesus tells the Christians of Smyrna not to be afraid and to remain faithful even unto death (vs. 10). He reminds them that their persevering faith will be rewarded with a "crown of life" (vs. 11).

*Questions for Reflection & Discussion:

1. How have you experienced persecution because of your faith in Jesus Christ? How did you respond to it?

2. Do you think you would be able to obey Jesus' instructions not to fear and to be faithful unto death? Why? Why not?

3. How are you preparing yourself for persecution?
