jesus reveals the future, part ii - mark 13

In this chapter of Mark's gospel Jesus describes different future events, some of which have already occurred (the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD) and others that have not yet occurred (the appearance of the antichrist, the great tribulation, and His own return to earth).

Verse 14 describes the appearance of the "abomination of desolation" that is usually understood to be the antichrist described in II Thessalonians 2:3-4. The appearance of this figure marks the beginning of a time in world history known as the great tribulation (verses 14-23). This will be a season of suffering that is far greater than anything the world has ever known and it will be a time of great spiritual deception.

After the great tribulation, the whole cosmos will be thrown into confusion as Jesus returns to the earth in great power and glory. Everyone will see Him when He comes and He will bring judgment against the unbelieving and salvation for those who belong to Him (vs's. 24-27).

Jesus' main point of application from all that He has said is that we must "stay awake" and "be on guard" for we do not know on what day or at what hour He will return (vs's. 32-37)!

*Questions for Reflection & Discussion:

1. How has this study helped you better understand future events?

2. How does the knowledge of Christ's return encourage you?

3. What does Jesus mean when He warns us to stay awake? How can you do this in your life?
