live in love - i john 3:11-24
The Tragic Example of Cain (3:12-15)... Cain is an example of what we must not be. His jealousy gave birth to hatred and murder. If we live in loveless hatred, then we are no better than Cain. Those who live in hatred are murderers in heart and cannot have eternal life abiding in them.
The Supreme Example of Jesus Christ (3:16-18)... We know what real love is by looking to the example of Jesus who laid down His life for us. We must follow in His footsteps with real actions of sacrificial sharing. We cannot just say that we love, but must put feet to our words.
The Confidence that Comes from Obedience (3:19-24)... By our obedience to Christ's command to love, we are able to know that we belong to the truth and have salvation. Our obedience leads to a confidence before God and an assurance that we will receive from Him whatever we ask.
*Questions for Discussion & Reflection:
1. What kinds of attitudes could lead to hatred and how can we fight against them? (Galatians 5:16-26)
2. What is real love according to our passage? How does this differ from the world's view of love?
3. How will you love in deed and in truth this week?
