In chapter 31, Jeremiah told about the new covenant that God would make with his people. In chapter 32, the hopeful focus continues as Jeremiah buys a field during the siege of Jerusalem, hides the deed and teaches that the land will come back into the possession of the people when the Lord brings them home from exile.
The wonderful promise of 33:3: “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” My Grandma Anderson had this verse on a plaque, and I remember it hanging on the back wall of her living room. I would see it every time I was in the room, which was often. Grandma believed that verse, and she believed her God. In that context, what great thing was God going to do? “I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them” (33:26). God’s people can always trust him.
Amid these cares and sorrows,
When courage sinks away,
Out of the words that are divine,
And sweetly to this heart of mine,
I hear the Saviour say:
Call and I will answer thee,
Call and I will answer thee;
Call in thy faith, call in thy need,
And I will answer thee. -- E. A. Barnes (1886)
