Let me begin by saying “Thank you!” to Daniel and Seth, two faithful brothers who have handled “Daily Word” for the two weeks I have been in Indonesia. Baxter is so blessed by God to have faithful men such as these among us. Now, to 1 Chronicles, which focuses on the southern kingdom of Judah, especially the reigns of David and Solomon and, thus, the Davidic covenant looms large. Beginning with an extended genealogy (which one might peruse quickly but certainly not ignore) from Adam to the tribes of Israel and the reigns of David and Solomon, the Chronicler telescopes our view more and more specifically on David. And why David? Well, one must remember the covenant God made with him, of which a significant component was: “I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. . . . And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever” (2 Samuel 7:13-16). From Judah, a descendant of David! A forever kingdom! Why does the Bible story, over and over again, come back to this focus? It’s obvious, isn’t it? The story is about Him!
Hail to the Lord’s Anointed,
great David’s greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free;
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity. -- James Montgomery (1821)
