April 2, 2026 - 2 Samuel 22-24

“David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.  He said:

         ‘The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;

         my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,

         my shield and the horn of my salvation.

         He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—

         from violent people you save me’” (22:1-3).

David knew who “buttered his toast.”  You know, that wording seems so flippant; I probably should not even have typed those words.  I can easily delete them but I think I will leave them.  For David, his last words of thanksgiving and praise to God had little or nothing to do with buttered toast, though, David could testify that God even provided bread when he needed it.  Remember David and the priests at Nob (1 Samuel 21)?  Here’s the thing, David trusted God for everything he needed:  daily break, deliverance from his enemies, physical strength, whatever.  This was not any sort of blind trust or wishful thinking on David’s part.  He had experienced God’s provisions and protections.  Over and over again, David had found God to be faithful.  So, we, remembering God’s faithfulness in times past, trust him for today and tomorrow and all eternity.

Our God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast,

And our eternal home:

Under the shadow of your throne

Your saints have dwelt secure;

Sufficient is your arm alone,

And our defense is sure

Our God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Be thou our guard while troubles last

And our eternal home.   -- Isaac Watts (1719)
