April 24, 2026 - 2 Chronicles 1-4

“Solomon the son of David established himself in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him and made him exceedingly great” (1:1).  Of course, Solomon accomplished so much:  the building of the temple, the building of his own palace, he built a great defensive military, he formed a mighty trading fleet of ships, and he possessed gold and silver in great quantities.  In fact, the Queen of Sheba could hardly believe her eyes when she saw the wealth of Solomon.  But his exceeding greatness is most clearly evidenced in the wisdom with which he ruled.  Offered by God anything he wished, Solomon asked for wisdom, and the Lord said to him, “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom . . .  wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you riches, possessions, and honor, such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like” (2:11-12).  It’s important to remember that greatness ultimately is not measured in terms of worldly wealth but in personal character.

How happy are all they who hear

true Wisdom's guiding voice;

and who her understanding make

their early, only choice.

For she has treasures greater far

than east or west unfold;

and her rewards more precious are

than all their stores of gold.   -- Michael Bruce (1796)
