August 16, 2025 - Obadiah

We have only the one chapter in which Obadiah spoke concerning Edom.  His message was quite clear and to the point:  Though Edom was lofty and proud, she would be brought down.  Though rich, she would be pillaged.  Having entered into alliances with other nations, she would be turned upon.  And all this because of Edom’s opposition to God's people.  As Edom had done to Israel, so it would be done to her; indeed, so it will be with all nations.  But the exiles of Israel will possess their land and salvation will be found on Mt. Zion.  Lessons:  What’s the old proverb?  “Pride goeth before the fall.”  Edom thought she was untouchable.  Many great nations have thought the same.  The psalmist reminds us:  Because of their pride and haughtiness, “He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision” (Psalm 1:2).  All nations, even our great nation, must be careful to walk with and trust in God.  Another lesson:  It’s a good thing to stand with God and his people.  It’s good to be on the right side.  God is faithful to his people.  It’s not good, it is dangerous, to be against God and his people.  And another:  The Lord saves all who look to him.

Sound the trumpet, the Lord is near,

hurry, the Lord is near ;

see, he comes to save us all,

hurry, the Lord is near.

Alleluia! Hurry, the Lord is near.

Alleluia, alleluia! Hurry, the Lord is near.   (Patrick Lee, 2005)
