August 22, 2026 - Nahum 1-3

Nahum announces God’s wrath against Nineveh, Judah’s enemy, who has persecuted her so.  A simple lesson here:  God will stand up for his people against their enemies.  And even if our deliverance does not come on a timetable pleasing to us, that deliverance WILL come.  Our God is faithful to save us and to deal with those who fight against us.  Anne Steele’s hymn reminds us of God’s goodness toward us as his people and shows him as a dear refuge when the storms swirl around us.  The people of Judah possessed this refuge and so do we.

 Ye humble souls, approach your God

With songs of sacred praise;

For He is good, immensely good,

And kind are all His ways.

All nature owns His guardian care;

In Him we live and move;

But nobler benefits declare

The wonders of His love.

He gave His Son, His only Son

To ransom us from sin:

‘Tis thus He makes His goodness known,--

Where shall our praise begin!

To this dear refuge, Lord we come;

On this our hope relies;

A safe defense, a peaceful home,

When storms of trouble rise.   –Anne Steele (1760)
