December 21, 2023 - Ruth 2:1-7

Another scene in Ruth’s story and several more observations.  First, Ruth was blessed to have married into not only an extended family but a caring family.  When hard pressed, Naomi quickly thought of a relative, Boaz, a worthy man who might help. We are thankful for our families.

From Boaz Ruth asked for nothing except the permission to glean; no handouts, here, only hard work.  I remember that the apostle Paul addressed the situation in Thessalonica in which there were those who were lazy and would not work:  “We would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.  For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies” (2 Thessalonians 3:10-11).  We recognize that, sometimes, because of health or other situations, someone cannot work; nevertheless, Ruth sets a good example for us.

We read that Ruth “happened” to come to Boaz’s field.  Yeah, right!  No mere happenstance, here!  We recognize God’s hand all over this situation and his faithfulness and goodness to direct the steps of one who trusts him.  We also read that Boaz asked about the young woman working in his fields.  He was a good and concerned employer.  We should always be gracious and concerned about those with whom we work.  And, so, we have this introduction to Boaz, which sets the stage for the rest of the story.

O God of Bethel, by whose hand thy people still are fed . . .

Through each perplexing path of life

our wandering footsteps guide;

give us each day our daily bread,

and raiment fit provide.

O spread thy covering wings around

till all our wanderings cease,

and at our Father's loved abode

our souls arrive in peace.   -- Philip Doddridge (1736)
