December 29, 2024 - Psalm 107

In Psalm 107, several times, the psalmist opines, “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”  God’s love toward us is demonstrated in many ways, but in no way more strikingly than in Jesus Christ.  He has loved us, not because we first loved him but “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).  Furthermore, “God commended his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).  What a gift to us is that of God’s love!  Frederick William Faber (1849) understood and testified:

Oh gift of gifts!  O grace of faith!

My God, how can it be

That Thou, who hast discerning love,

Shouldst give that gift to me!

God’s love is eternal & enduring.  It is without limit.  It is so great that “that He gave his only begotten Son” (John 3:16).  What love!  “Christ who was rich, became poor for our sakes that we who are poor might become rich” (2 Cor 8:9).

Could we with ink the ocean fill

And were the skies of parchment made,

And every stalk on earth a quill

And every man a scribe by trade.

To write the love of God above,

Would drain the ocean dry.

Nor could the scroll contain the whole

Though stretched from sky to sky.   -- Frederick M. Lehman (1917)

Hear Peter’s argument, here.  Christ has suffered and died so that we might no longer live our old lives, rather, that we “might live in the spirit the way God does” (4:6-7).  Furthermore, “the end of
