February 24, 2025 - Deuteronomy 23-27

Moses continues to prepare the people for entering the Promised Land by reminding them about God’s instructions to them:  the assembly and uncleanness, laws concerning masters and slaves, idolatry, interest, vows, divorce, and Levirite marriage.  This last was a provision for a widow without a son.  The nearest male relative was to marry her, and the first son born would be given the name of the deceased “that his name may not be blotted out of Israel” (25:6).  Fairness in business dealings, offerings of firstfruits and tithes and more matters receive attention.  Here’s the thing, Israel was moving into a bad neighborhood where idolatry and all sorts of sin were rampant.  They were to be different.  They were God’s people and, when those outside looked at them, they would see a people that reflected the goodness and righteousness of their God.

Witness, ye men and angels, now,

Before the Lord we speak;

To him we make our solemn vow,

A vow we dare not break.

That long as life itself shall last,

Ourselves to Christ we yield,

Nor from his cause will we depart,

Or ever quit the field.

We trust not in our native strength,

But on his grace rely;

That, with returning wants, the Lord

Will all our need supply.

Lord, guide our doubtful feet aright,

And keep us in thy ways;

And, while we turn our vows to prayers,

Turn thou our prayers to praise.   -- Benjamin Beddome (1818)
