July 22, 2024 - Jeremiah 39

The Chronicler of Israel closed his report of these events:  “The Lord, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place.  But they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words and scoffing at his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, until there was no remedy. (2 Chronicles 36:15-16).  God acted “persistently . . . had compassion . . . but they kept mocking and scoffing . . . until there was no remedy.”  God will not be mocked.  A hard lesson for Israel.  Let us never make light of or spurn our God’s compassion toward us.

Jesus, thou art all compassion,

Pure unbounded love thou art;

Visit us with thy salvation;

Enter every trembling heart.

Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place,

Till we cast our crowns before thee,

Lost in wonder, love, and praise.   –Charles Wesley (1819)
