July 31, 2026 - Ezekiel 21-23

Wow, these are rough chapters.  Judgment upon judgment against Jerusalem because of her sins.  The people have been sinning even from the days in Egypt, and they continue to do so.  The Lord threatens a sword against them, Ezekiel’s wife dies, and the city comes under siege by the Babylonians.  Did the people think that the word of the Lord, declared by so many prophets for so many years, would not come to pass?  How hardened and how foolish they were.  I’m reminded of the words that are found in various places in the Scriptures: “Let those who have ears to hear, hear.”  We hear not only the warnings and threatenings, but also the invitations and pleadings of our God.  If a nation, if a person, will not hear and turn, it is only because of stubborn refusal.  How often has God called out!  And he continues to call out.  He is longsuffering and patient and good.

Depth of mercy! Can there be

mercy still reserved for me?

Can my God His wrath forbear?

me, the chief of sinners, spare?

oft profaned His hallowed name,

put Him to an open shame.
