In his despair, to whom does the psalmist cry? He cries to the Lord: “Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negeb!” (126:4) With whom does the psalmist walk? He walks with the Lord and in his ways: “Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways!” (128:1). From whom comes blessing for the psalmist and the people? They come from the Lord: “The blessing of the Lord be upon you! We bless you in the name of the Lord!” (129:8). And, then, there is this. Faced with his own iniquity, where does the psalmist look for redemption? He looks to the Lord. One of the most encouraging testimonies in the Psalms is found as the psalmist cries out to the Lord: “If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness” (130:3,4) and “O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption” (130:7). In the Lord we find all we need!
Out of the depths, O Lord, I cry to You
When I am tempted to despair
Though I might fail to trust Your promises
You never fail to hear my prayer
And if You judged my sin
I’d never stand again
But I see mercy in Your hands.
So more than watchmen for the morning
I will wait for You, my God
When my fears come with no warning
In Your Word I’ll put my trust
When the harvest time is over and I still see no fruit
I will wait, I will wait for You. –Bob Kauflin (2008)
