The Song of Solomon is a love song between two lovers. Especially, as the young woman describes her lover and friend, the young man, in such wonderful and adoring phrases, I’m thinking to myself, “Now, that’s how we should adore Jesus.” He is “notable among ten thousand” (5:10), his “head is purest gold” (5:11), “he is absolutely desirable” (5:16). That I could always say about the Lord: “I am my love’s and my love is mine” (6:3)! That’s the sort of love that exists between Christ and his bride, the church.
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
in a believer’s ear!
It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds,
and drives away our fear.
It makes the wounded spirit whole
and calms the troubled breast;
‘tis manna to the hungry soul,
and to the weary, rest. –John Newton (1782)
