A PSALM. A SONG FOR THE SABBATH.
It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night,
to the music of the lute and the harp,
to the melody of the lyre (92:1-3)
For the Old Testament Jews this psalm was a song for singing on the Sabbath. Interesting to me is that I come across these verses on a Saturday which, of course, is the Jewish Sabbath. For us as Christians, we gather on the first fay of the week for corporate worship. The first thought that comes to my mind is that it is good, always, whether on a Saturday or Sunday or Monday or any other day of the week, to give thanks to God and to sing praises to him. A second thought is this: I am so grateful for those who lead and assist us in worship at Baxter, our worship leader, those who play our instruments, those who read Scripture and pray, those who direct us in the Lord’s Supper, those who prepare orders of service, those who lead in our missions moments, those who collect and count our gifts and offerings, those who watch our children, those who take care of our sound and technologies, and everyone else, especially the entire congregation as we sing. Surely, the Lord is pleased with all who help us in worship.
How good it is to thank the Lord,
and praise to you, Most High, accord,
to show your love with morning light,
and tell your faithfulness each night;
yea, good it is your praise to sing,
and all our sweetest music bring. –Anonymous (1912)
