“Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. And the LORD said to Joshua, ‘See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor’” (6:1-2). We know the story of the fall of Jericho. We tell the story. We do skits with our children. We teach them to sing, and these verses will suffice for today’s hymn selection:
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, Jericho, Jericho.
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho,
and the walls came tumbling down.
You may talk about the men of Gideon;
you may talk about the men of Saul;
there’s none like good old Joshua,
at the battle of Jericho.
Up to the walls of Jericho
he marched with sword in hand.
“Go blow those ram’s horns,” Joshua cried,
“for the battle is in God’s hands.
Then the horns began to bellow,
the trumpets began to sound,
and Joshua commanded the children to shout,
and the walls came tumbling down.
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, Jericho, Jericho.
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho,
and the walls came tumbling down. --African-American spiritual
