May 10, 2023 - Psalms 7-12

David writes, “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High” (9:1-2). It is possible to live in the past to such a degree that one finds himself struggling to live in the present while pining away for the past. Of course, that’s not a healthy way of living, But, also, of course, we must not forget the past. And, in fact, it is good to remember all God’s gracious deeds and his provisions for us. When we reflect on how good he has been to us, we find ourselves falling more and more deeply in love with him. David writes, “I will recount all of your wonderful deeds,” and we sing:

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Count your blessings, name them one by one;

Count your blessings, see what God hath done;

Count your blessings, name them one by one;

Count your many blessings, see what God hath done. --Johnson Oatman (1897)
