Thanksgiving, remembering, gladness, praise. The genuinely Christian life is characterized by such things. We are overwhelmed with God’s goodness, and we daily give thanks to him for all his provisions. He gives us our daily bread and so much more. Especially when God seems far away, we remember his powerful and gracious deeds that he has performed on our behalf, and we are greatly encouraged to know that he, today, is the same gracious God he has always been. Each day, we remember that it is the day the Lord has given us, and he walks with us through the day, and we are glad. We consider all his ways and all he is, and we cannot help but praise. In another psalm, Asaph testifies, “The Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth” Psalm 50:1-2). Hear David, once again, declare the beauty and splendor of the Lord: “On the glorious splendor of your majesty” (Psalm 145:5). Indeed!
O for a thousand tongues to sing
my great Redeemer’s praise,
the glories of my God and King,
the triumphs of his grace!
My gracious Master and my God,
assist me to proclaim,
to spread thro all the earth abroad
the honors of your name. –Charles Wesley (1739)
