As one reads through the Davidic Psalms, quite the striking matter is, time after time, situation after situation, David's regular and continual looking to God for help. For David, his cries to the Lord are not merely occasional or at special religious times. Rather, he seems always to be calling out to the Lord. He rests in his God daily. He talks with his God often. His testimony: “You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance” (32:7). Again: “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth” (34:1). And again: “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” (34:8). David is the king. He would often have found himself in the congregation of worshippers and worshipping publicly. You get the sense, though, that his devotion and trust are primarily not for public display but for personal, private communion with God. It’s regular thing. It’s a daily thing. It’s an always thing.
O taste and see that he is good;
experience will decide
how blest are they, and only they
who in the Lord confide.
Fear him, you saints, and you will then
have nothing else to fear;
make serving him your sole delight,
your wants shall be his care. –Anonymous (1754)
