May 28, 2025 - Psalms 46-50

May I simply quote from Psalm 46, this morning?  What a way to start our day, with these comforting words!

TO THE CHOIRMASTER. OF THE SONS OF KORAH.

ACCORDING TO ALAMOTH. A SONG.

1 God is our refuge and strength,

      a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,

      though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam,

      though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

      the holy habitation of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;

      God will help her when morning dawns.

6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;

      he utters his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD of hosts is with us;

      the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

And, of course, a hymn selection.  What better hymn than Martin Luther’s “A Might Fortress is Our God!”

Did we in our own strength confide,

our striving would be losing,

were not the right Man on our side,

the Man of God's own choosing.

You ask who that may be?

Christ Jesus, it is he;

Lord Sabaoth his name,

from age to age the same;

and he must win the battle.   –Martin Luther (1529)

Lots of woes and troubles here.  And lots of sevens: 7 seals.  7 angels.  7 thunders.  Just some quick thoughts.  There is lots of detail here, apocalyptic detail.  This sort of stuff can be difficult

144,000 from the tribes of Israel.  And a great multitude from every nation, tribes, peoples, and languages, which no one could number.  These pictures always come to my mind when I read these verses.
