Now, that which Paul himself has experienced – forgiveness of his sins and a right relationship with God and eternal life – he wants Israel to experience: “For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh” (9:3). The covenants are theirs. And the promises. And the Christ. And all other things.
Israel has a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge (10:2), and Paul’s “heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved” (10:1). Furthermore, “there is no distinction between Jew and Greek . . . everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” 910:12,13). What is Israel’s is ours! Also, a good thing to do today – pray for the salvation of Israel.
Proclaim to ev’ry people, tongue, and nation
that God, in whom they live and move, is love;
tell how He stooped to save His lost creation,
and died on earth that we might live above.
Give of thy sons to bear the message glorious;
give of thy wealth to speed them on their way;
pour out thy soul for them in prayer victorious;
O Zion, haste to bring the brighter day.
Publish glad tidings, tidings of peace;
tidings of Jesus, redemption, and release. -- Mary Ann Thomson (1868)
