October 8, 2021 – 2 John

Just a single chapter in John’s second letter. He writes: “Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win full reward” (vs. 8). Deceivers had gone out into the world, who were teaching falsely about Jesus Christ. As believers, in every generation, we always must deal with false teaching and opposition to the truth. And that opposition comes from so many directions. But , in the face of so much opposition and error, we do not lose heart nor do we despair. A thought from the apostle Paul, from his Philippian letter, offers encouragement: “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

Christ is made the sure foundation,

Christ the head and cornerstone,

chosen of the Lord and precious,

binding all the church in one;

holy Zion's help forever,

and her confidence alone. -- J. M. Neale (1861)
