September 1, 2026 - Matthew 10

“And he called to him his twelve disciples . . . These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, ‘Go . . . proclaim . . . Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons” (10:1-8).  In yesterday’s thoughts, I referenced the many ways in which Jesus ministered to and served others.  Now, he instructs his disciples to do the same.  As they go, Jesus instructs them further:  “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.  Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.   When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour.  For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. . . . and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake” (10:16-20,22).  Furthermore, the things they (and we) will experience are the very things Jesus himself has endured.  But great will be their (and our) reward.

“Take up thy cross,” the Savior said,

“if thou wouldst my disciple be;

deny thyself, the world forsake,

and humbly follow after Me.”

Take up thy cross, let not its weight

fill thy weak spirit with alarm;

His strength shall bear thy spirit up,

and brace thy heart, and nerve thine arm.

Take up thy cross, nor heed the shame,

nor let thy foolish pride rebel;

thy Lord for thee the cross endured,

to save thy soul from death and hell.

Take up thy cross, and follow Christ,

nor think till death to lay it down;

for only they who bear the cross
