Peter’s confession . . . He got it right! “Who do you say that I am?” Jesus asked. And Peter answered, “The Christ of God” (9:20). Jesus explained, further, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised” (9:22). The anointed one of God. Ordained of God, from before the beginning of time, to come into the world as Savior. Peter’s confession continued at Pentecost: “Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified” (Acts 2:36). In telling how we can possess assurance of eternal life, another disciple, John, wrote that those who are truly of God will make a right profession of Christ: “We have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God” (1 John 4:14-15).
Hail, risen Saviour! thee we hail,
Who, by Almighty pow’r,
Didst over death and hell prevail;
We bless the glorious hour.
High on thy father David’s throne,
Forever live and reign;
'’ill by thine own right hand alone,
Thy ev’ry foe be slain. -- James Relly (1776)
