September 9, 2026 - Mark 1-4

Just like Matthew, at the very beginning of his Gospel, Mark emphasizes the continuity of the biblical story by quoting from the Old Testament.  Major themes of the first chapters:  preaching, healing, and the calling of the disciples.  Jesus used human instruments, as frail and prideful and slow to learn as they were, to accomplish his purposes.

One of Jesus’ most quoted teachings is in 2:17.  In response to the Pharisees’ question to his disciples – “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinner?” – Jesus said, “Those who are well don’t need a doctor, but the sick do need one.  I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”  That’s me!  A sinner!  And he came to get me!  That’s a wonderful thought, isn’t it?  After all, we are sinners, and he has come to claim us!  What hymn might we consider, this morning?  I think it must be this.

Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,

weak and wounded, sick and sore;

Jesus ready stands to save you,

full of pity, love, and pow’r.

Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome,

God's free bounty glorify;

true belief and true repentance,

every grace that brings you nigh.

Let not conscience make you linger,

nor of fitness fondly dream;

all the fitness He requireth
