Elisha and the time of miracles. The miracle of the widow’s oil strikes me as similar to Jesus’ feeding of the thousands. Elisha asked, “What have you in the house?” It’s as though the man of God can work with whatever is present. That’s the way it is with God. He can work with whatever we have. He can take this talent or that, this item or that, this desire or that, whatever, and use it for his purposes. I suspect, if the widow had answered, “A little firewood” rather than “Nothing but a little oil,” that Elisha would have said, “Bring the firewood and let’s work with that.” To us it’s almost as if the Lord says, “Don’t worry, I can work with whatever you have. Trust me!”
Bring your empty earthen vessels,
clean thro’ Jesus’ precious blood,
Come, ye needy, one and all;
And in human consecration
wait before the throne of God,
‘Till the Holy Ghost shall fall. (Chorus)
Like the cruse of oil unfailing
is His grace forevermore,
And His love unchanging still;
And according to His promise
with the Holy Ghost and pow’r,
He will ev’ry vessel fill. -- Mrs. C. H. Morris (1912)
