So many miracles in the days of Elisha! The widow’s oil. A child for the Shunammite woman. The deadly stew purified. Namaan healed of leprosy. The axe head recovered. Deliverance from Syria. And now, in chapter 11, the report of the prophet’s death. But even in death his influence continues: “So Elisha died, and they buried him. Now bands of Moabites used to invade the land in the spring of the year. And as a man was being buried, behold, a marauding band was seen and the man was thrown into the grave of Elisha, and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.” (13:20,21) Extraordinary post-mortem influence to say the least! But a good reminder that it is good to leave a good legacy. Also a reminder to trust God, always!
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;
to his feet your tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
evermore his praises sing.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Praise the everlasting King!
Praise him for his grace and favor
to his people in distress.
Praise him, still the same as ever,
slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Glorious in his faithfulness! --Henry Francis Lyte (1834)
