All that we have, in any good sense, is only because of our God. In particular, Peter writes, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1:3). Peter continues his thought and reflects on the living hope we have, the imperishable inheritance that is ours, God's protections, etc. And that which we have was foretold by the prophets long before (1:10). How great are our blessings in Jesus Christ, and the greatest is the life we have in him both now and in eternity. That’s a good thing to remember as we are barraged, in this season, with so many gifts from others. We are thankful for those gifts but our greatest “Thank you!”s are given to our God.
Blest be the everlasting God
the Father of our Lord!
Be his abounding mercy praised,
his majesty adored!
When from the dead he raised his Son,
and called him to the sky,
he gave our souls a lively hope
that they should never die.
To an inheritance divine
he taught our hearts to rise;
'tis uncorrupted, undefiled,
unfading in the skies.
Saints by the power of God are kept,
till the salvation come:
we walk by faith as strangers here,
but Christ shall call us home. –Isaac Watts (1760)
