December 31, 2022 - Psalm 119

Here on the last day of 2022, looking to the new year, it would be good for us to resolve with the psalmist: “ In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word” (119:14-16). There is nothing so helpful and fruitful in building trust and strengthening our faith in God than time spent in the Bible. There we read the greatest story ever told. There we find the promises of God and see how he is faithful to fulfill them. There we get direction for our lives, the Word of God serving as a lamp to our feet and a light to our paths. There we learn about our Savior! On the other hand, our discouragement and weakness of faith can so much be attributed to our lack of time in God’s Word. 2022 is past; 2023 is upon us. Let us not only commit to being in God’s Word but actually do so. What joy will be ours!

How precious is the Book Divine,

By inspiration giv’n!

Bright as a lamp its doctrines shine

To guide our souls to heav’n,

To guide our souls to heav’n.

It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts

In this dark vale of tears,

Life, light, and joy it still imparts

And quells our rising fears,

And quells our rising fears.

This lamp through all the tedious night

Of life shall guide our way

Till we behold the clearer light

Of an eternal day,

Of an eternal day. -- John Fawcett (1782)
