December 8, 2025 - 2 Peter 2-3

False teachers, blasphemers, lovers of the world, apostates . . .  Peter does not mince words.  The Lord will deal harshly with these people.   And there were lots of them around, as there are in every generation.  There were also scoffers, who doubted and ridiculed the return of Christ.  But he will return, and so, Peter exclaims:  “What sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God!” (3:12)  He also encourages, “But according to  his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (3:13).  Difficult times, but a sure promise in the midst of it all!

Now we fight the battle,

But then shall wear the crown

Of full, and everlasting,

And passionless renown.

The morning shall awaken,

The shadows shall decay,

And each true-hearted servant

Shall shine as doth the day.

There God, our King and Portion,

In fullness of His grace,

Shall we behold for ever,

And worship face to face.   -- Bernard, of Cluny (1145)

Hear Peter’s argument, here.  Christ has suffered and died so that we might no longer live our old lives, rather, that we “might live in the spirit the way God does” (4:6-7).  Furthermore, “the end of
