As we begin a new quarter century as a nation, these chapters become particularly poignant. Isaiah looked to the future when a people long in exile would gain their freedom and return to their homes. The prophet called to the people: “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins” (40:1-2). Furthermore, Isaiah encouraged the people with this promise from God: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (41:10). The promises to Israel continue (I am not given nearly all of them, here.): “For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” (43:3). We are grateful to God for all his blessings upon our nation but, even more, we thank him for our great salvation, the pardoning of out iniquity, and the promises of his care and presence in our lives.
