“Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy” (61:1-3). à The Rock that is higher than we! And here’s the thing, he hears our cries from wherever we are, even from the end of the earth. He is always there for us.
“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water” (63:1). “Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings” (63:7). à Our Rock. Water for our parched souls. Our help. We find in God all we need.
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die. --Augustus Toplady (1776)
