“Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me; all day long an attacker oppresses me; my enemies trample on me all day long, for many attack me proudly. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” (56:1-4) à Now, isn’t that something! Seemingly, we are opposed at every turn. The world is not happy with us. Satan attacks us. Our own sins war against us. But we put our trust in God, and we do not need to be afraid.
Furthermore, every single struggle we face is known by God, taken into account by him, and he graciously keeps us. We might think he is not noticing when we suffer. We might think he has looked away. But David’s testimony reassures us: “You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?” (56:8).
Jesus, lover of my soul,
let me to thy bosom fly,
while the nearer waters roll,
while the tempest still is high;
hide me, O my Savior, hide,
till the storm of life is past;
safe into the haven guide,
O receive my soul at last!
Other refuge have I none;
hangs my helpless soul on thee;
leave, ah! leave me not alone,
still support and comfort me.
All my trust on thee is stayed,
all my help from thee I bring;
cover my defenseless head
with the shadow of thy wing. --Charles Wesley (1740)
