In many of the Psalms, the psalmist is found recounting the mighty acts of God on behalf of Israel. He also remembers how rebellious and unfaithful Israel has been. But time and time again, “they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress” (107:6). Of course, the greatest work of all is that which Jesus accomplished as he became our priest who stands for us before the Father and of whom the psalmist testifies, “The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek’” (110:4). It was good that the people “thank the Lord for his steadfast love” (107:15). And it is good that we do so, also. When I pause during the day, from time to time, and reflect on God's goodness his children, I just want to scream, “Thank you!” It is amazing, amazing, amazing, how good he has been to us. “Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them” (11:2). Indeed!
Now thank we all our God
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done,
in whom his world rejoices;
who from our mothers’ arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today. -- Martin Rinkart (1636)
