And so, we come to the end of the book of Psalms. Such honesty and transparency on the part of the writers as they share their joys and fears, their victories and their failures! So many parallels with our own experiences! We know these guys. We have walked in their shoes. We have cried out as they have. We have prayed as they have. We have rejoiced as they have. And, now, they and we end as we should, i.e., with praise for our God who has walked with us, every step of the way, and who continues to abide with us. And so, we agree with the psalmists: “Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God” (146:3-5). In another place, the psalmist has declared, “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2). So be it!
O for a thousand tongues to sing
my great Redeemer’s praise,
the glories of my God and King,
the triumphs of his grace!
Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
that bids our sorrows cease,
‘tis music in the sinner’s ears,
'tis life and health and peace. --Charles Wesley (1739)
