June 24, 2025 - Proverbs 24-27

I so often recall these verses:  “A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might, for by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory” (24:5-6).  A wise and knowledgeable man will make good decisions.  But a wise and knowledgeable man will also seek out others who can give him good and wise counsel.  We see this play out when presidents form their cabinets and teams of advisors and, though such groups are not always so wise, at least there is the recognition that it is good to get other opinions.  It is said that, in medical diagnoses, it is always good to get a second opinion.  In purchasing a new car we will likely visit several dealerships in order to see what they are all offering and only then make our decision to buy.  It’s good not to jump too quickly and buy a house without considering possibilities other than that one piece of real estate.  And in the church, of course, God has placed pastors and others who counsel together to lead the church.  And, always, the truly wise person will seek not merely human wisdom but the wisdom of God, which is perfect

The perfect wisdom of our God . . .

Oh grant me wisdom from above,

To pray for peace and cling to love,

And teach me humbly to receive

The sun and rain of Your sovereignty.

Each strand of sorrow has a place

Within this tapestry of grace;

So through the trials I choose to say:

“Your perfect will in your perfect way.”   -- Keith Getty & Stuart Townend (2010)
