June 5, 2023 - Psalms 135-139

The extreme positions so many in our country take on abortion is heartbreaking. Our culture certainly has moved away from any pretense of a biblical worldview and biblical ideals. I always think of Psalm 8 and David’s view of human beings as created by God with dignity and worth. David has more to say on the subject in Psalm 139: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of the, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them” (Ps 139:13-16). I think of Jeremiah whom God formed in the womb and consecrated. I think of Samuel whom God gave to Hannah in answer to her prayers. And what about John whom God have to Zechariah and Elizabeth! And Jesus conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit! And so many others.

All that I am I owe to Thee;

Thy wisdom, Lord, has fashioned me.

I give my Maker thankful praise,

whose wondrous works my soul amaze.

Ere into being I was brought,

Thine eye did see, and in Thy thought

my life in all its perfect plan

was ordered ere my days began.

Thy thoughts, O God, how manifold,

more precious unto me than gold!

I muse on their infinity,

awaking I am still with Thee. –The Psalter (1912)

Hear Peter’s argument, here.  Christ has suffered and died so that we might no longer live our old lives, rather, that we “might live in the spirit the way God does” (4:6-7).  Furthermore, “the end of
