A second round of conversations between Job and his “friends.” Eliphaz: “Listen to me and I will inform you” (15:17). Job: “I have heard many things like these. You are all miserable comforters” (16:1) On the one hand arrogance, on the other brokenness (Job: “My spirit is broken” - 17:1) Bildad’s words are not any more helpful, nor are Zophar’s. I think these guys are trying to help, but they misspeak and demonstrate a bit of haughtiness. They do not provide Job what he needs. There is One, however . . . “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in m my flesh I shall see God, who I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!” (19:25-27).
I know that my Redeemer liveth,
And on the earth again shall stand;
I know eternal life He giveth,
That grace and power are in His hand.
I know, I know that Jesus liveth,
And on the earth again shall stand;
I know, I know that life He giveth,
I know His promise never faileth,
The word He speaks, it cannot die;
Tho’ cruel death my flesh assaileth,
Yet I shall see Him by and by. -- Jessie Brown Pounds (1893)
