Right after he lost everything, Job refused to curse God, as his wife had counseled. And now, he continues: “As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter, as long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit” (27:2-4). What a man of integrity is this man Job! And what unending bowing to God’s will, even when he does not understand it.
Job rests his case with God: “Let me be weighed in a just balance, and let God know my integrity!” (31:5) Somehow, he knows, he just knows, that God will ultimately do what is right and make things right. That’s faith! Can’t help but quote Horatio Spafford:
When peace like a river attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
“It is well, it is well with my soul.”
It is well with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control:
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and has shed his own blood for my soul. – Horatio Gates Spafford (1873)
