Job has spoken. His friends have spoken. Now, it’s time for God to speak. And he speaks from out of the whirlwind. Job is immediately put on notice that it is time to listen.
You know, you can make a statement by asking a question. Maybe like: “You’re not going to wear that, are you?” That’s not really a question, rather, a statement: “You really need to go back in and put something else on!” Well, that’s what God is doing here.
Job, you weren’t there when I created the earth. You weren’t even born.
Job, you don’t rule over the day and the night.
Job, you know nothing about the depths of the sea.
Job, you can’t control the rain.
Job, you don’t rule over the stars. Etc., etc.
Job, you really should not be questioning me and my justice. Just be still and know that I am God.
And in that answer – Be still and know that I am God – Job gets all he needs. He never gets all his questions answered. But he gets something better than answers. He gets God. And that’s enough.
My God! I know, I feel thee mine,
And will not quit my claim,
Till all I have is lost in thee,
And all renew’d I am.
I hold thee with a trembling hand,
But will not let thee go,
Till stedfastly by faith I stand,
And all thy goodness know.
Jesu, thine all-victorious love
Shed in my heart abroad!
Then shall my feet no longer rove,
Rooted and fix’d in God. -- Charles Wesley (1788)
