May 29, 2025 - Psalm 51

Psalm 51 . . . what can I say?  It is every believer’s testimony.  After sinning, David cried, as do we:  “Have mercy on  me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions . . .”  Like David, we sin, and our consciences burn, and our hearts break, and we cry out to the God against whom we have sinned.  We plead for mercy, and mercy we must have if we are not to sink even more deeply into the mire of sin and be lost forever.  But the Lord’s love is steadfast, and as many times as we go to him, he receives us and restores us.  When I think of how many times, how often, God has shown me mercy, I am just about overcome.  It is amazing!  Amazing grace, anyone?

God, be merciful to me;

On thy grace I rest my plea;

Plenteous in compassion thou,

Blot out my transgressions now;

Wash me, make me pure within;

Cleanse, oh, cleanse me from my sin.

My transgressions I confess;

Grief and guilt my soul oppress;

I have sinned against thy grace

And provoked thee to thy face;

I confess thy judgment just;

Speechless, I thy mercy trust.   –Confession Songs (1912)

144,000 from the tribes of Israel.  And a great multitude from every nation, tribes, peoples, and languages, which no one could number.  These pictures always come to my mind when I read these verses.
