November 4, 2022 - Matthew 6

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. . . . But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you” (6:1-4). Oh, how we enjoy getting noticed, especially for the good things we do. Then, people praise us and call us good. But, at the end of the day, that which really matters is that God sees us and is pleased with us and with what we do. And he does, indeed, see. We need not worry that our deeds of compassion and care and righteousness might go unnoticed by God even if no one else sees. So, let us do good, as the prophet instructed: “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8).

Make me a channel of blessing, I pray;

My life possessing, my service blessing,

Make me a channel of blessing today. -- Harper G. Smyth (1903)
