September 14, 2025 - Luke 1-4

“Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us . . .” (1:1).  From the writer of the epistle to the Hebrews:  “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (1:1,2).  Just think, the Creator God has spoken to us!  He has spoken to us through his prophets and evangelists and apostles.  And he has spoken to us through his Son!

The stories in the Gospels are amazing.  The birth of Jesus happening exactly as the prophets foretold.  The sending of John to prepare the way.  The Father’s protection of his son when Herod and others sought to kill him.  The shepherds and angels coming to worship.  The wise men.  The baptism and temptation in the wilderness.  And the amazing ministry that follows.

Jesus began his ministry, Luke tells us, by reading in the temple from the prophet Isaiah:  “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor . . .” (4:18).  This is the old, old story that began way back when, that continues with Jesus, and will culminate with his return.  It’s the “Jesus story.”  We say, “Thank you, Father, for this story and for your son!”
