After the healing of the paralyzed man, who was lowered through the roof by his
friends, everyone who saw was amazed and in awe and said, “We have seen extraordinary things today” (5:26). I’m reading through the Gospels, and I’m thinking about this. The people around Jesus, day after day, saw amazing things happen. The Gospel accounts are full of amazing stories. In another place, Jesus said to Nathanael, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these” (John 1:50). And to his disciples, on another occasion, he said, “For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel” (John 5:20).
And on still another occasion, to Thomas and Philip: “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father” (John 14:12). I find myself wanting to pray, “Father, let me see these greater works today!” How about a verse from David?
I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.
