July 5, 2023 - Jeremiah 1

“Jeremiah . . . to whom the word of the Lord came” (1:1,2). It’s good that God has spoken and that his words have been written down. And the Lord said to Jeremiah, “Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you” (1:8). It’s good that the Lord has protected his spokesmen and caused them to stand in the face of opposition. The explanation of the vision: “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it” (1:11). Not only has God spoken, not only has his word been written down for us, and not only has God sustained his spokesmen, but God has does everything he says he will do. It’s good that he does so! The God who speaks, sustains, and acts!

I am quite certain that Jeremiah, if he had known the words of W. A. Ogden’s hymn, would have heartily and gratefully sung along with us:

‘Tis the grandest theme through the ages rung;

‘Tis the grandest theme for a mortal tongue;

‘Tis the grandest theme that the world e’er sung,

“Our God is able to deliver thee.”

He is able to deliver thee,

He is able to deliver thee;

Tho' by sin oppressed,

Go to Him for rest;

“Our God is able to deliver thee.” --W. A. Ogden (1887)
