May 16, 2024 - Psalms 11-15

931)I saw an article about the world champion Kansas City Chiefs’ kicker and his commencement address at a Catholic university.  He was unapologetic about his faith and spoke directly to the graduates, calling them to lives of godliness.  Oh my, the vitriol that has been spewed out at him in the media!  That which was once seen as good is now seen as evil, precisely as the prophets had told:  “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20).

David:  “Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.  Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak” 12:1-2).  Exactly as Isaiah warned, exactly what we see, today.  We are hard pressed on every side but the Lord says of the godly, “I will place him in the safety for which he longs” (12:5).  David affirms, “You will guard us from this generation forever” (12:7).

Since godly Men decay, O Lord,

do thou my Cause defend;

For scarce these wretched Times afford

one just and Faithful Friend.

The Promise of his aiding Grace

shall reach its purpos’d End:

His Servants from this faithless Race

he ever shall defend.   –Anonyous (1754)
