September 8, 2023 - Luke 5-8

An amazing story. Jesus got into the boat with Simon, who had been fishing all night, was tired, and had caught nothing. Jesus instructed him, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch” (5:4). Simon explained that they were tired, but if Jesus said so, they would cast their nets, again. They struggled to bring in their nets because they were so full of fish! There was no logical reason for them to cast their nets once more. They did so simply because Jesus said to do so. Sometimes, that’s just good enough, isn't it? Why? Because Jesus says so!

And so many other things did Jesus do: leper healed, the paralytic brought to Jesus by friends, the calling of Levi, questions about fasting and the Sabbath, the healing of the centurion’s son, the widow’s son raised, the sinful woman forgiven and, oh my, the teaching sessions! Reading the stories and following him around from town to town and back and across the sea, seeing his compassion and power . . . well, like the old hymns declare, this old, old story just never grows old, and we want to hear it told over and over again, even throughout eternity!

The old, old story it is ever new

The old, old story,

Praise the Lord, it's true,

That Jesus died for me as well as you,

I love the old, old story,

When the roll is called up yonder,

I’ll be walking up the Kings highway.

Tell me the old, old story,

I love Him better every day.

Hallelujah! --Hymn medley
